New Farmland Protection Report from American Farmland Trust

On Wednesday, May 20, 2020, American Farmland Trust will release its groundbreaking report: “Farms Under Threat: The State of the States.” Among other things, it finds that between 2001 and 2016, 11 million acres of farmland and ranchland were converted to urban and highly developed or low-density residential land use. That’s equal to all the U.S. farmland devoted to fruit, nut, and vegetable production in 2017—or 2,000 acres a day paved over, built up, and converted to uses that threaten the future of agriculture! They will hold two events to launch the report. The first event will paint a striking picture of the threats facing working farms and ranches and highlight what can be done to protect the agricultural land base. It will be led by AFT President John Piotti and feature a discussion with NRCS Chief Matthew Lohr and California Secretary of Agriculture Karen Ross, who will share their perspectives on what AFT's findings mean for the future of agriculture.

The second event is geared toward practitioners and will provide an in-depth look at AFT's analyses of agricultural land conversion and state policy responses, plus a summary of our “Call to Action” for policymakers. Both sessions will include audience participation, live polling, and multiple opportunities to ask questions and engage in dialog.
